Has anyone heard of the diabetes medication, metformin, being used for weight loss?

andy asked:

My doctor, who prefers the natural way, prescribed this medication for me and said it was safe. He said it was great for weight loss, and it can also be used, orally of course, to do a body cleanse. I don’t have diabetes, but he said that wouldn’t matter because the medication if safe. Any serious feedback will be greatly appreciated. Please don’t advise on weight loss techniques, and address this medication as I’m am very concerned about it. Thanks in advance

Metformin is a diabetic drug . There is no doubt about that. It also helps to reduce the appetite thus can ultimately cause weight loss. This is also important to most Diabetics.

Actually, Metformin (or Glucophage) is not only used to reduce glucose levels, but insulin, and testosterone as well. The side effects of which reduce all of the following; acne, hirsutism, abdominal obesity, and amenorrhea.

Metformin has many other health benefits and relatively low negative side effects. Your doctor or pharmacist should be able to address those concerns better though.

The short answer to your question is yes. It should help reduce weight. Glucophage has been proven to have had positive effects on pregnancy as well as negative though. So if you are planning or thinking about having kids soon, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist this as well.

    Hope that helps!

Metformin is used for weightloss in women who have PCOS. Mostly because a majority of women with PCOS are Insulin Resistant which is kind of the opposite of Diabetes. Metformin helps to sensitize your cells to insulin so you stop overproducing insulin IF your insulin resistant.

If you do not have PCOS and Insulin Resistance I STRONGLY recommend that you do not take this medication. It’s very hard on your body and yes it can be kind of considered a cleanse but it’s not healthy. It gives you a horrible stomach ache and the urge to go #2 at random times…sometimes you might barely make it to the bathroom…sorry if that’s TMI.

I would consider another doctor for weightloss if you do not have PCOS or Insulin Resistance. But if you do have it…take it and stick with it, make sure you take it every day as prescribed, it will help with weightloss but you need to diet and exercise in order to really lose weight. Metformin just helps your body proccess sugar, which is not done with insulin resistance.
